DeAndre Yedlin took part is his first Tottenham training session today since joining the club during the January transfer window. The Seattle Sounders homegrown player has had a meteoric rise to fame since making an impression with the U.S. national team and signed a pre-contract with the Premier League club after last summer’s World Cup.
The 21-year-old was sporting his adidas Predator Instincts at the session. He was handed the #12 jersey and hopes to work his way into the game day lineup which could come soon with Hotspur having a busy January with 6 matches (3 EPL matches, an FA Cup match, and 2-leg League Cup semi-final) before the end of the month.
“It’s important for his development that he is given the time to adapt to his new surroundings on and off the pitch,” Tottenham Hotspur Mauricio Pochettino told FIFA.com.
Yedlin only had 2 caps to his name when Jurgen Klinsmann named him to the 23-man roster headed to Brazil. He was selected largely due to his blazing speed but has shown an ability on the ball as well. After not playing in the opening group match to Ghana, Yedlin helped start the play that set up Clint Dempsey’s goal against Portugal and had some good feeds in the loss to Germany. He came on as first half substitute for an injured Fabian Johnson in the Round of 16 match against Belgium.
The defender is a great success story for Major League Soccer. After playing 2 seasons with University of Akron, he signed with the Sounders in January 2013 as the team’s first homegrown player. He was named to the MLS All Star Team in his rookie season, becoming the first rookie since 2005 to make the team. He ended with 56 games and 1 goal for the Sounders.
