VfL Wolfsburg are rumored to have agreed to terms and ready to sign a 9-year partnership with Nike, according to the Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung. Nike was previously the club’s technical sponsor from 2004-2009.
This is not the first time the Bundesliga club has been linked with the American sportswear brand. Kicker reported last year that a 10-year €80 million (US$90 million) deal was in the works but that was never finalized. At the time, the club was in a 5-year deal with Italian brand Kappa which started in 2014 but is thought to include a 2-year break clause.
The new deal will be a huge boost to the club who is facing some financial uncertainty as their major front-of-the-jersey partner Volkswagen’s future investment is uncertain.
Wolfsburg made a historic run to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals losing to Real Madrid. They are currently 10th on the Bundesliga table.
