Abby Wambach does what many people do when they retire…hit the links for a couple of rounds of golf. The former USWNT forward took part in a FootGolf Faceoff against a familiar soccer foe in Japan and partnered with Caitlyn Jenner in a Pro-Am all as part of this weekend’s ANA Inspiration tournament.
Jenner made headlines on the opening hole when she sank her second shot for an eagle. But Wambach stole the show with her high-spirits during the round and when she jumped in Poppie’s Pond after the 18th hole following the tradition of ANA Inspiration, formerly known as the Kraft Nabisco Championship and sometimes called ‘the Dinah Shore’, where the winner takes the plunge following the final round.
“I like the interaction between Caitlyn and Abby. I love to watch golf, but I wanted to see the banter,” Annalee Davis told The Desert Sun.
Wambach and Jenner along with Josh Doxater and Tom Abbott and LPGA pro Danielle Kang on the back nine finished strong to win the Pro-Am with a 16 under par scramble round.
But for Wambach the round of ‘stick golf’ was the 2nd leg of her tournament. She teamed up with another USWNT legend in Julie Foudy along with American LPGA stars Paula Creamer and Jessica Korda in the inaugural ANA Footgolf Faceoff earlier in the week. The 6-hole footgolf round had the foursome matched against Japanese national soccer team stars Ayumi Kaihori and Yayao Kobayashi along with Japanese LPGA stars Ayako Uehara and Shiho Oyama.

“Footgolf really was fun,” Wambach said of the outing. “It was really special. It made me want to become a golfer and play on the LPGA. I can’t thank ANA enough for sponsoring this event.”
The ANA Inspiration, golf’s first major event, is at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, CA.
