The United States men’s and women’s national teams will have a new look in 2016 with Nike unveiling a new home and away jersey that is the first to include the updated federation crest at the Nike Innovation 2016 summit in New York City.
The two jerseys make a bold statement with the home jersey taking an interesting twist on the traditional white jersey and the away jersey being predominantly black. The 2 jerseys have new standout details that are due to the new Nike Vapor with Aeroswift that was also launched at the event in the Big Apple.
The home jersey is white with blue and red detailing. The white body of the jersey features a subtle graphic design. The graphic design is part of the Nike Vapor Aeroswift that allows for a single, for breathability, and double knit, for structure.
The back of the v-neck collar, shoulders and arms are blue. The light blue color is created by alternating narrow blue and white vertical stripes. This pinstriping is made to stand out with a wider striping on the sleeve cuff. The inside of the right cuff includes ‘1 Nation’ while the left cuff has ‘1 Team’ which can be seen when the cuffs are folded up.
Inside the jersey there is a circular design with ‘We Can,’ ‘We Will,’ ‘We Are,’ ‘1 Nation’ and ‘1 Team’ surrounding ‘USA’ in the middle.
“We know that that particular rally cry came from a social media campaign in the last World Cup,” Scott Munson, Nike’s VP of Apparel for Global Football told World Soccer Shop at the Nike Innovation 2016 event. “The team has selected it themselves and used it during that tournament and put it in their locker room. And so we know it means something to them and we have included that in the garment as well.”
The v-neck collar is set apart from the rest of the shoulder with a red collar trim detail. The red detail color is continued down the side of the jersey. ‘USA’ is woven into the back of the outside of the collar.
Topping of the 2016 jersey is the new US Soccer Federation badge over the heart and the Nike Swoosh in navy on the right chest.
The full kit is completed with white shorts, which for the first time are made from the same material as the jersey due to the Nike Vapor Aeroswift technology, and white socks.
For the away jersey, Nike and US Soccer opted to go with a black jersey that has muted red right sleeve and shoulder and blue left sleeve and shoulder. The back of the v-collar is completely in blue and stands out with a black detail around the back of the neck.
The same ‘USA’ and ‘1 Nation’ and ‘1 Team’ are on the collar and sleeve.
The jerseys will feature in this summer’s 2016 Copa America Centenario, the Rio 2016 Olympics for the women (and potentially the men depending on their playoff result this month), as well as being the go-to looks for the start of the FIFA World Cup qualifying hexagonal for the men.
The jerseys will make their on-field debuts with the MNT and the U-23 MNT on March 25. The WNT will first wear the new look in a friendly against Colombia on April 6.
