The 2015/16 USA Away jersey which was official unveiled today by Nike after several (accurate) images were leaked last week has big shoes to fill as it replaces one of the most popular U.S. jerseys, the Bomb Pop. And this jersey does not shy away from making a statement.
The jersey is a bold blue with gradient graphic on the front and back that conveys continuous motion from the neck to the waistline and from one arm to the other. The gradient graphic and continuous motion look is created with white and various shades of blue vertically streaking across the jersey with the overall look a lighter blue at the top of the jersey and darker blue near the waist.
A wide white stripe runs down the side seam from under the arm to the waist.
The jersey is given some extra pop with a red insert at the base of the modern v-neck collar. The red insert successfully works as a focal point on the jersey then diverting the eye to the Nike Swoosh over the right chest and the U.S. Soccer Federation badge over the heart. The U.S. women’s national team jersey has the added detail of the 2 stars over the badge representing their Women’s World Cup victories in 1991 and 1999.
The inner collar has a pennant tab with 13 red and white stripes representing the original colonies.
The women’s national team will be the first to give the new jersey a match run out with the team scheduled to use it during the 2015 Algarve Cup that runs from March 4 – 11. The men’s team will take the field for the first time in the 2015 Away jersey in a friendly against Switzerland on March 25.
“The new kit was designed to showcase the USA’s tremendous sense of national pride as well as their distinct sense of style, while also capturing the nation’s eternal optimism for achieving greatness,” said Martin Lotti, Creative Director for Nike Soccer.
The U.S. Away Kit will be completed with away shorts in dark blue and white a white stripe on each side. The men’s sock will be dark blue while the women’s sock will be dark blue with a gradient design similar to the jersey.
What do you think about the new jersey? Love it or hate it? And before you blast it, let’s remember the Bomb Pop was not universally loved (or even liked) by most fans when it was first released.
