The Rhinos entered their second home game of the season Sunday winless at 0-4-3, but had only allowed a respectable seven goals through as many games. The offense, which only had two goals to its credit, finally got on track against the visiting Portland Timbers, guiding Rochester to a 2-1 victory.
The Rhinos struck first in the in the 14th minute when John Menyonger sent a through ball that was missed by Portland defender Cameron Knowles. Striker Matthew Delicate scooped up the ball, eluded a defender and Timber netminder Jordan James to finish off with an open net and a 1-0 lead for Rochester. For Rochester, it was their first lead of the season.
After a 77th minute equalizer, it didn’t take long for a determined Rochester squad to regain the lead. In the 80th minute Luke Kreamalmeyer sent a ball into the box from the right side from 35 yards out. Delicate gained position inside the box, and deftly redirected the ball to an oncoming John Menyongar who finished off the play, beating Jordan and giving Rochester their first win.
Four games into his season with Cleveland, Brazilian midfielder Adriano Sella de Souza appears to have found his stride, helping guide the City Stars to a 3-0 victory on the road in Bermuda and a 2-2 draw at Western Mass.
The fans in Bermuda’s National Stadium were given a treat in the 26th minute as Man of the Match Adriano Sella connected on one of the most exciting goals in team history. Sella blasted the ball past the keeper while spiraling through the air.
Sella continued to apply the pressure in the 41st minute, when he found captain Mark Schulte on a free kick. Schulte was able to fight through the mass of defenders while knocking the ball through for a 2-0 Cleveland lead.
Trailing 1-0 eight minutes in against the Pioneers, it did not take long for the City Stars to even the match. Two of Cleveland’s most exciting young players factored yet again into the scoring in the 19th minute when Adriano Sella found Sallieu Bundu in front of the net and Bundu found the back corner for a 1-1 score.
