The Rhinos returned to USL-1 play Saturday night at Marina Auto Stadium, where they welcomed the Cleveland City Stars and went home with a 4-1 victory.
After just three minutes, the Rhinos found their first opportunity when midfielder Ryan Heins played a cross into the box from the left side. Forward Johnny Menyongar found the end of it and volleyed the ball into the goal, but was called for offsides.
Five minutes later, midfielder Andrew Gregor ripped a shot from 20 yards out after beating a Cleveland defender, but City Stars goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap punched the ball out for a corner.
In the 20th minute, Menyongar found himself free in the box and laid a pass off to forward Warren Ukah. Ukah took a touch and his shot was saved by Gilstrap.
Five minutes later, Rochester would go up 1-0 after Cleveland gave the ball away and defender John Ball found Ukah open in the City Stars defensive half. Ukah looked up and saw Gilstrap off his line then took a shot from 30 yards out to put the ball into the back of the net.
The Rhinos doubled their lead in the 41st minute when midfielder Tiger Fitzpatrick played a ball into the run of Menyongar, who shrugged off a Cleveland defender and shot past Gilstrap from 15 yards out. The goal was Menyongar’s seventh of the year.
Coming out of the halftime interval, the Rhinos were determined to keep pushing forward. Fitzpatrick linked up with Menyongar again in the 46th minute and Menyongar fired into the far post from the right side to put the home team three goals up. His second goal of the game gave him eight for the season and three goals in his last two league games, making him the league leader in goals scored.
In the 77th minute, forward Tai Atieno went in on a breakaway on a pass from midfielder Kwame Sarkodie and Atieno tapped the ball past Gilstrap to put the Rhinos up 4-0.
The City Stars got a goal back through defender Ibrahim Kante on a penalty kick in the 90th minute, but the Rhinos improve to 8-5-5 (29 points) with the win while Cleveland drops to 2-12-6 (12 points).
Rochester will continue USL-1 play Friday night where they will host the Vancouver Whitecaps at 8 p.m. at Marina Auto Stadium.
