It was a most unusual week in Major League Soccer, with five teams out of action, two saved penalty kicks, a few surprise results and more deflected goals than you could ever want.
Despite so much craziness crammed into only six matches, all but four teams held position from last week's edition. Colorado make the big jump of three places, while Columbus and D.C. United fell two spots each.
#1- Houston Dynamo (1)
After last week, the Dynamo had built up margin for error, so a lackluster rally draw at home to Real Salt Lake didn't threaten their tabletop status. You know it's a bit of a rough week when hot hand Brad Davis flubs a spot kick, but a storming Brian Ching header came to the rescue. Our top dogs hit the road to La-La Land to face the Galaxy this weekend.
#2- Chivas USA (2)
Away on SuperLiga time. This place reserved.
#3- Seattle Sounders (3)
The Sounders probably feel like they dropped four points last week, with a pair of deflected goals rescuing a Qwest share for D.C. United before a Keystone Cops moment from Tyrone Marshall made them rally against New York. With heel nippers Colorado set to visit, it's good for Seattle fans to see Fredy Montero heating up. With two goals, two woodworks and several other fine plays on the week, he looks set to streak.
#4- Colorado Rapids (7)
Now unbeaten since mid-April, the Rocky Mountain bunch could pull to within a point of second place Chivas USA (with a game still in hand) this week. The Rapids will host FC Dallas on Wednesday before visiting Seattle on Sunday. With Conor Casey away on U.S. duty, Omar Cummings picked a fine time to go gazelle on defenses and Matt Pickens is coming up big in goal.
#5- Chicago Fire (5)
Away on SuperLiga time. This place reserved.
#6- D.C. United (4)
It seems that old Black-and-Red magic also works in white. Unfortunately, they used it all up in Seattle and were weekend whipping boys at Colorado. It seems switching suddenly to a four-man backline wasn't such a gopod idea after all. United is off for some Open Cup fun before a July 4th date with the Crew.
#7- Kansas City Wizards (8)
Away on SuperLiga time... but they climb a rung, thanks to the Crew's shock loss.
#8- Columbus Crew (6)
Just when the champs seemed to be hitting form, they fall apart in Dallas. Though, they have scored in every game thus far, the run of play offense is not performing to last year's level. On Saturday, the Crew get another shot at a struggler trying to come around when they visit New York on Saturday.
#9- New England Revolution (9)
Away on SuperLiga time. This place reserved.
#10- Toronto FC (10)
Back in league play after taking off to pull a CONCACAF Champions League qualification miracle, the BMO boys host New York on Wednesday and visit RSL on short order on Saturday.
#11- Real Salt Lake (11)
They may well have hung on for the win at Houston last week if defender Jamison Olave hadn't been so eager to be sent off. Quite simply, goals have been too hard to come by for as much pressure as they apply and the defense is shakier than last year. It's back to home cooking for Saturday's visit from Toronto FC.
#12- Los Angeles Galaxy (12)
The Home Depot Center boys narrowly hold this spot after a lifeless derby loss to San Jose. Still a few weeks away from The Return and without Landon Donovan one more time, L.A. may slip before they rise with Houston coming to town this weekend. Veteran defender Gregg Berhalter will need to kick his habit of fouling speedsters in big ways with Kei Kamara set to challenge.
#13- FC Dallas (13)
After beating the champs, FC Dallas suddenly has more points from their last four outings than they accumulated over the season's opening 10 games. The playoffs may well already be out of reach, but young players like Eric Avila, Dax McCarty and Brek Shea are starting to shine. Now if they can just find some set piece marking to help out overworked netminder Ray Burse...
#14- San Jose Earthquakes (14)
Like FC Dallas, the Quakes have started to turn things around with seven points from the last four contests. A generally comfortable derby win against L.A. in Oakland should have team spirits high as they take a round off. They'd do well to both rest and sharpen as next Friday brings a trip to RSL.
#15- New York Red Bulls (15)
It was an admirable effort against wily Seattle in the rain that finally gave the Red Bulls their 10th point of the season after 16 games. Juan Pablo Angel finally broke out of his funk, which is very good news with a double road trip to Toronto FC and Columbus on the docket. Now if the backline would stop giving away silly goals...
