The Rhinos hosted the Charleston Battery Saturday night at Marina Auto Stadium looking to gain some momentum after two scoreless draws in their last two league matches. The two sides were both unable to convert their many chances and tied 1-1.
Rochester’s first chance came in the third minute when forward Jonny Menyongar played a neat one-two with midfielder Tiger Fitzpatrick in the Charleston penalty area. Menyongar hit a shot from the corner of the box but it wasn’t hard enough and Battery goalkeeper Keith Wiggans made the save.
In the 18th minute, Menyongar beat his defender again in the box and served a cross to the middle but it was just over the head of defender Brent Sancho.
Another minute later, he would do the same and find forward Tai Atieno but Wiggans was able to make the stop again on the header. The Rhinos would break through first in the 27th minute after Fitzpatrick burst through the Charleston defensive half and found the feet of Menyongar in the box. The Liberian hit a shot to the far-post off one touch to put the ball in the side netting and give his team a 1-0 lead.
The Battery leveled the game in the 36th minute when forward Randi Patterson dribbled by a Rhinos defender and ripped a shot to the far post, just past the hands of Rochester goalkeeper Tim Melia. The teams headed into the halftime interval tied 1-1.
Four minutes into the second half, defender Danny Earls got an early cross down the left sideline into the box finding midfielder Kwame Sarkodie. Sarkodie’s header was put just to the outside of the near post.
In the 77th minute, defender Kenney Bertz got a header on goal off of a cross from midfielder Andrew Lorei, but Wiggans made the save off the line.
The tie improves Rochester to 7-5-5 (26 points) in USL-1 play while Charleston improves to 8-3-8 (32 points).
The Rhinos will travel to face D.C. United in a U.S. Open Cup semifinal game Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. They will host the Cleveland City Stars next Saturday night at Marina Auto Stadium at 7:35 p.m.
