Boyens will leave to join the squad on Sept. 2 and will return to the United States on Sept. 11. As a result, Boyens will be unavailable for selection for the Red Bulls’ Sept. 6 match against the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park at 8:30 PM ET.
Boyens was signed by the Red Bulls on May 6, 2008. The 24-year-old from Dunedin, New Zealand, has played in 12 matches for New York, starting in 11. Prior to joining the Red Bulls, Boyens spent his first season in MLS in 2007 with Toronto FC after being drafted in the first round (10th overall) in the 2007 MLS SuperDraft from the University of New Mexico. Boyens scored a goal and an assist in 23 games played for Toronto FC.
On the international level, Boyens has earned five caps for New Zealand. He made his national team debut on Aug. 15, 2006 in a friendly against FC Sevilla and made his first start in a 2-2 draw with Wales on May 26, 2007.
New Zealand (3-0-0, 9 pts.) is in first place in its World Cup Qualifying group, one point ahead of New Caledonia. The first match will be played in Noumea, New Caledonia on Sept. 6 before the teams head to Auckland, New Zealand on Sept. 10.
