S365's MLS Club Ladder - Week 13
2009-06-17 16:35:19

by Greg Seltzer for Soccer365

With draws now apparently out of style, we were treated to eight winners from eight Major League Soccer match this week - and don't think that our thoroughly subjective single table style council failed to notice.

Apart from idle Colorado, every team in the top 12 has moved from last week, with white-hot Houston claiming the summit. Columbus was the only climber to rise as many as two rungs, while New England fell three spots as the biggest dropper.

We will see four teams off to SuperLiga play, which will naturally make the coming few editions especially tricky to rank. Somehow, we shall muddle through...

#1- Houston Dynamo (2)

Now clearly the kings of the hill, the Dynamo are excelling through international and injury absences thanks to their impressive depth. Newcomers Andrew Hainault and Cam Weaver continue to make big contributions (told ya so!), while the ability to field a veteran like Richard Mulrooney when the regular midfield fulcrum is away speaks to the organization's excellence. With eight wins, a draw and a 15-3 goal differential from their last nine, somebody will need to forcibly stop Houston's runaway train. This week brings a visit from warming West rivals RSL.

#2- Chivas USA (1)

It had to happen sooner or later, and a week when they visit both Houston and Columbus would seem like a reasonable time for the Goats to come back to Earth. The longer term problem is that suddenly, no one but Eduardo Lillingston is scoring run of play goals. With SuperLiga about to kick off, Preki has some non-league time to figure this one out.

#3- Seattle Sounders (4)

For my money, there is no MLS side that can match the Sounders for team off-the-ball movement in attack and we saw the evidence against a scrapping San Jose. After finally breaking back into the win column, Seattle will sample the East twice this week. They host D.C. United on Wednesday, then visit the Big Apple three days later. And just in time, Seattle gets back key guys Osvaldo Alonso, Jhon Hurtado and Nate Jaqua.

#4- D.C. United (5)

Becoming more solid by the week, United jumped in front of rivals Chicago before the break and then defended for their lives after to regain the East penthouse. Christian Gomez is starting to feel it, as we saw on his winning free kick. Saturday brings a tricky visit to rested Colorado.

#5- Chicago Fire (3)

A few questions... how long can the Fire keep Marco Pappa from Europe? Where is Jon Busch circa 2008? When will Brian McBride score again? Why have the Fire allowed more first half goals than anyone but San Jose? With the round off, coach Denis Hamlett has time to answer the last three.

#6- Columbus Crew (8)

Having now won four of six, the champs are unbeaten in nine. Several weeks back, I considered Guille Schelotto's lack of assists harmful to the team... but I suppose if he's gonna go ahead and lead the league in goals, I may have made too much of the issue. Seeing as how the East looks like a six-horse race for the time being, another win at FC Dallas is what the holders should expect from themselves.

#7- Colorado Rapids (7)

All rested and fortified in the absence of Conor Casey by the arrival of Pat Noonan, the Rapids will host East leaders D.C. United this weekend.

#8- Kansas City Wizards (9)

I realize the already shorthanded Revs were reduced to 10 men after a half hour, but to me, any win over New England is impressive. Coach Curt Onalfo had to smile seeing Herculez Gomez sparking the attack, as they needed another offensive threat to come forward. Next, the Wizards will take part in SuperLiga.

#9- New England Revolution (6)

Also headed to SuperLiga play, New England look close to getting defender Chris Albright and Gabriel Badilla during the tourney. Steve Nicol would also do well to field or sign a striker not named Taylor Twellman because Shalrie Joseph needs to go back to midfield for good this time. Even before Emmanuel Osei's red card last weekend, Kansas City was waltzing up the gut time and again.

#10- Toronto FC (11)

After winning for the first time in three weeks, TFC must unfortunately cool their league heels for a round. The good news is they return to MLS play next week for another against struggling New York, this time at home. Nick Garcia's arrival spawned a new 3-5-2, which did quite well on its debut. As for Pablo Vitti, my word, how has he not scored yet?

#11- Real Salt Lake (12)

The reward for snapping an eight-game win drought with their first road win of the term? A visit to Houston. Luckily, Nick Rimando is back to his best in the RSL net, and this team draws huge inspiration from their keeper. It also can not be discounted how important it is to see Yura Movsisyan scoring again - even if his goal against Los Angeles was quite soft.

#12- Los Angeles Galaxy (10)

The Galaxy finally had a negative double Donovan episode; Landon was away and Ricketts struggled in net against RSL. With a resurrection of their derby in San Jose this week, hopefully L.A. won't have to wait another month for their next victory.

#13- FC Dallas (13)

It's time for some extra finishing work at the Pizzeria; they easily could have grabbed a share of even beaten rivals Houston this week. The 4-1-4-1 seems to be working, with Dax McCarty and David Ferreira rejuvenated. The next assignment is another tough one, as weekend guests Columbus are heating up.

#14- San Jose Earthquakes (14)

Fresh from a rather lifeless performance against Seattle, the Quakes must raise the energy level for the visit of SoCal nemesis Los Angeles. Again, we had shuffling in midfield, and again San Jose was overran. I thought Frank Yallop would have his side in form by now, at least in attack, but this may actually take a while. One also must wonder why arch rivals Houston can always get good things from forwards who the Earthquakes have no use for.

#15- New York Red Bulls (15)

Poor Danny Cepero... not only did no one bother to come after your save of a penalty kick, but thehy stand around watching after you stuff a breakaway. Well, I suppose there's a reason only two clubs face more shots per game. Meanwhile, the offense is second in the league in shots, but last in goals scored. Egads.
