Obama Backing FIFA World Cup Bid
2009-04-14 22:06:44
President Obama has put his stamp of approval on the Unites States bid to host either the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup and has written a letter to FIFA president Sepp Blatter with his endorsement.

President Obama has put his stamp of approval on the Unites States bid to host either the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup and has written a letter to FIFA president Sepp Blatter with his endorsement.

President Obama is known to have a passion for sports from playing pick up basketball to hinting at a college playoff for Division 1 football.

“Soccer is truly the world’s sport, and the World Cup promotes camaraderie and friendly competition across the globe,” Obama said in a letter to Blatter that was released to the New York Times by the United States Soccer Federation with permission from the White House.

In the letter he went on to add:  “As a child, I played soccer on a dirt road in Jakarta, and the game brought the children of my neighborhood together” and “As a father, I saw that same spirit of unity alive on the fields and sidelines of my own daughters’ soccer games in Chicago.”

FIFA has named Brazil has the host of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and is scheduled to make a decision on the host nation(s) for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups in December 2010.

The United States will be a solid choice for FIFA having hosted one of the most successful FIFA World Cups in history back in 1994.  And with no issues surrounding the infrastructure to host the event from suitable stadiums, to hotels, to travel from venue to venue the U.S. is considered a good choice.

Regardless, U.S. Soccer is laying the ground work should they receive the bid.  They sent out a letter to 70+  prospective venues seeking information on the potential to for the venue to host a match.
