Wilson upstaged his Team of the Week companions by coming off the bench in the 54th minute of a then 2-0 game in favor of the defending Southwest Division Champion Fresno Fuego. The Seals promptly staged a three-goal turnaround and defeated the Fuego 3-2 on their own Chukchansi Park turf.
The tide began to turn on Fresno in the 64th minute when pressure from San Francisco in the Fuego’s defensive third caused the referee to award a penalty kick. The Seals’ Jose Diaz converted to make it 2-1 Fresno.
Continued pressure in the 80th minute saw Diaz find his way into the scorebook for the second time, this time on an assist to Wilson. And just four minutes later, the Seals took the lead for good on Wilson’s second strike of the evening. That goal was assisted by Fabricio Codeceira.
A close second to Wilson’s performance, the Houston Leones’s Eric Dominguez came off the bench in the 67th minute and picked out three different Leones teammates to lead expansion Houston to a 3-0 victory in their home debut against the New Orleans Shell Shockers.
Defenders Oliver Skelding of the Long Island Rough Riders and Matt Delaney of the New Hampshire Phantoms were in direct opposition throughout their 1-1 season opening draw on Saturday, May 3. Both earned Team of the Week nominations for limiting the chances of the other’s attacking teammates.
In El Paso, a formidable Patriots side was held scoreless by Austin’s Miguel Gauardo, who picked up four saves and a shutout in the Aztex’s first USL appearance.
