Revs Down Kickers 3-0
2008-07-02 16:11:03

Defending champions of the event, the Revs used goals from Sam Brill, Joe Germanese and Taylor Twellman and a pair of assists from Chris Tierney to secure passage to the quarterfinals, where they will meet another USL-2 team, Crystal Palace Baltimore on Tuesday, July 8. Crystal Palace earned a surprise 2-0 victory over MLS side New York Red Bulls on Tuesday night to punch their ticket to the quarterfinals at Veterans Stadium.

The third-round match, which was originally scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., kicked off just before 9 p.m., following an almost two-hour delay because of strong thunderstorms moving through the area.

Brill and Germanese’s goals were the first of their professional careers, while Twellman got his first starting nod after returning from an ankle injury last Saturday.

Revolution goalkeeper Doug Warren, making his first start for the first team since the 2006 U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals, earned the shutout with a five-save effort. Richmond keeper Ronnie Pascale made three saves in the loss.

With the rain still falling and the surface slick, New England attempted to test Pascale with a few early, long-range shots from Pat Phelan and Tierney, but neither effort found the target.

The only serious chance of the first half fell to Richmond in the 19th minute. Forward Adrian Bumbut was played through, and with the ball holding up on the wet field, managed to reach the ball first and poke a shot towards goal. However, Warren charged off his line and made a sliding stop to push the ball wide.

New England took the lead less than one minute into the second half, as Brill converted the club’s first shot on target of the match. Tierney whipped an out-swinging corner kick towards the near post, where Brill arrived to power a diving header into the net and record the goal in his first professional appearance.

The Kickers had a great chance to equalize in the 55th minute when midfielder Stanley Nyazamba’s curling pass beat the Revolution’s backline and sent Bumbut in alone from 25 yards out. Bumbut took one touch before firing a shot on target, but once again Warren came off his line to make the diving save.

The Revs extended their lead to 2-0 in the 63rd minute when Germanese repeated Brill’s earlier accomplishment by notching his first professional goal in his first professional appearance. Left back Chase Hilgenbrinck’s long, cross-field pass was controlled by Germanese on the right wing, and the rookie midfielder dribbled into the box before firing a low drive under the keeper.

Twellman scored New England’s third in the 67th minute, with Tierney picking up his second assist of the night. His pin-point, out-swinging cross from the left wing found Twellman at the near post, and the striker’s bouncing header was pushed off the crossbar by Pascale and over the line.

New England will return to MLS regular-season action on Friday, July 4, when the team will visit David Beckham and the Los Angeles Galaxy at the Home Depot Center at 10:30 p.m. ET. Following the Galaxy match, the Revolution won’t play another MLS game until Aug. 9, as the club will be participating in SuperLiga and additional Open Cup matches throughout July.

Tickets for next Tuesday’s U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match against Crystal Palace Baltimore are available at www.new-britain.net for $13 in advance of the game. Day-of-game tickets will be $18.
