The Turkey men’s national soccer team kicked off their 2014 schedule with a 2-1 win over Sweden in Ankara in Thursday. The Turks will hit the USA in May for friendlies against the USA and Honduras before beginning preparations for their EURO 2016 qualification campaign which starts this Fall.
During their meeting with Sweden, Turkey debuted their all red 2014/15 Nike home kit. The new jersey was unveiled along with the 2002 FIFA World Cup third-placed finishers white away shirt earlier this week. Both use Nike’s new V-neck shirt design with a band across their chests featuring the Çintemani pattern (a traditional Turkish design symbol that represents power and protection).
A graphic of the g All Seeing Eye, also known as the Evil Eye or Nazar Boncugu is printed on the inside inner neck area. In Turkish culture it promises to bring bearers luck and keep a watchful eye over them, warding off evil and keeping them safe.
Many Turkish fans have expressed satisfaction regarding the 2014/15 Turkey home and away kits enlarged crest that is a circular representation of the country’s national flag.
Always a formidable opponent, the Turkish national team features a slew of players from well-known domestic clubs such as Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş along with foreign-based players like Borussia Dortmund midfielder Nuri Şahin and Arda Turan of Atlético Madrid.
