2015 was a big year in soccer! From Cristiano Ronaldo winning the FIFA Ballon d’ Or to start the year to the 2015 Women’s World Cup to the building excitement for the 2016 Copa America Centenario there was plenty to love about the last 12 months.
The stories were not only about results on the field but also related to releases and unveiling of the game’s other stars, the cleats and apparel worn by the players. #25 – Venegas Applying the Pura Vida Touch in Canada – Costa Rica’s Carolina Venegas turned heads at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup with her custom ‘Pura Vida’ Nike Mercurial Superfly cleats bu Kickasso.
#24 – MLS Duo Backed by Messi – Lionel Messi is the best player in the world and he selected 2 players from Major League Soccer, the LA Galaxy’s Gyasi Zardes and New York City FC’s Khiry Shelton, to be a part of Team Messi.
#23 – EA Sports Reveal FIFA 16 Cover Stars – EA Sports FIFA games are a passion for some game players an addiction to others and they were all eager to see who would join Messi on the FIFA 16 game cover. The release of the regional players was all the hype when released and fans in the U.S. were happy to see Women’s World Cup winner Alex Morgan join Messi for the U.S. distribution.
#22 – Nike Unveils Copa America 2015 Ball – The Copa America is the oldest continental championship in the world and some believe it is the most competitive year-in-year-out. The focus has shifted to next year’s centennial event but earlier in the year it was all about 2015 and the release of the official match ball of the 2015 Copa America
#21 – 10 Host Venues Announced for Copa America Centenario USA 2016 – Speaking of the Copa America, the 2016 Centenario will be the biggest tournament hosted in the U.S. since the 1994 FIFA World Cup and fans were eager to check out the announcement on the host venues.
#20 – adidas Predator Instinct Accelerator Remake Release – The adidas Predator Revenge pack was well received by players and one of the most popular from the series was for the adidas Predator Accelerator. It should be no big surprise as legend France midfielder wore the iconic cleat during Les Bleus run to the 1998 FIFA World Cup title.
#19 – adidas Launch 2015 Mexico Apparel – Fans of the Mexican national team were eager to see if rumors of a change of the home jersey color from the traditional green to black was true to eager to check out the line of apparel released be El Tri Colores ventured south to play in the 2015 Copa America.
#18 – La Liga Doomed if Spain Breaks Up – Spain’s La Liga is a 2-horse race most season with Real Madrid and Barcelona fighting for domestic dominance. But with Catalonia looking to gain independence from Spain it is calling into question whether Barcelona would be eligible to play in La Liga if the region seceded.
#17 – Nike Release the Intense Heat Pack – Nike is arguably the best brand at promoting product releases and their biggest cleat pack to hit the field was the Intense Heat Pack. The updated colorways of the Swoosh’s 4 cleat silos was ahead of the final push in the domestic leagues ahead of the summer heat.
#16 – adidas f50 adiZero Y-3 (Real Dragon) Up-Close – Yohji Yamamoto’s limited edition cleats are collector’s items and so it is no surprise that fans still want to catch a glimpse of the rare cleats. The adidas F50 adizero Y-3 (Real Dragon) were released in 2014 but still have some buzz in 2015.
#15 – Soccer Community Stands with and Helps Paris Terror Attack Survivors – The Paris terrorist attacks shocked the world and had a unique connection with the beautiful game with some of the attacks taking place before the France vs Germany friendly at the Stade de France. The soccer community rallied to make a statement that terror will not win the game.
#14 – Nike Reveals Tiempo Legend Touch of Gold – Ronaldinho is a legend of the game and his gold Nike Air Legend Tiempo cleats were all the rage with the viral ‘Crossbar’ video. Nike released a limited edition ‘Touch of Gold’ cleats in celebration of the 10 year anniversary.
#13 – adidas Laceless Ace GTI Revealed – A laceless cleat…impossible. Well not so fast, the news that adidas is scheduled to release a laceless cleat had fans eager to see what all the hype was about and make plans to get a pair.
#12 – Nike Release Rare Gold Mercurial CR7 – Cristiano Ronaldo had a big year taking home the Ballon d’Or to start the year. In tribute of his 3rd Ballon d’Or, Nike released a limited edition ‘Rare Gold’ Mercurial Superfly CR7.
#11 – Nike CR7 Steps Out in NFL – The Nike CR7 is so popular it not only dominates the game of soccer but American football as well. The Green Bay Packers Tramon Williams pulled on the Nike Mercurial Vapor X Superfly CR7 to get his job done on the gridiron.
#10 – Embrace your Inner Outlaw this Presidents’ Day – The American Outlaws have changed the game in the stands at U.S. national team matches with the goal of helping change the game on the field. The limited edition President’s Day American Outlaw t-shirts featuring George Washington and Abraham Lincoln were all the rage when released.
#9 – Nike Celebrates Cristiano Ronaldo with Quinhentos and 324K Gold Cleats – Ronaldo kept busy after taking home the Ballon d’Or and set the Real Madrid and UEFA Champions League scoring records and is still going strong. Nike released the limited edition Mercurial Superfly CR7 324K Gold and Mercurial Superfly CR7 Quinhentos to celebrate.
#8 – Jersey Close-Up Authentic vs Replica – Questions are always asked about the difference between authentic and replica soccer jerseys. The WSS guide to telling the difference is a go to for buyers making sure they get the right jersey for their game.
#7 – Go Pink with Style in Support of Breast Cancer Awareness – Breast Cancer Awareness Month is one of the most visible campaigns developed. Pink is the symbol of the month with people wearing pink to support those touched by the disease and to help find a cure. World Soccer Shop and Kickasso created some custom soccer cleats to raise funds for the cause.
#6 – Kicking Autism with Kustom Kicks – World Soccer Shop and Kickasso also worked on a pair of custom soccer cleats to raise funds for Autism. The Nike Hypervenom in the Clearwater/Blue Lagoon colorway served as the canvas for this unique puzzle piece design.
#5 – Hypervenom II Made for Deadly Agility – After 2-years of success, soccer players were eager to see what the first update the Hypervenom silo would bring. The Hypervenom II has continued the success of the silo.
#4 – New Balance Set to Sign Multiple Soccer Stars – Mystery cleats started to show up on fields across Europe at the end of 2014 and rumors that New Balance was getting back in the soccer game was confirmed at the end of the year with the Boston based brand announcing their line-up of soccer stars to wear the cleats.
#3 – Short History of the Soccer Cleat – Soccer cleats are the heart and soul for many fans of the game. Some are not even players but collect cool and rare shoes and the short history of the soccer cleat always ranks high on the annual most read story list.
#2 – Nike Honors Black History Month with Limited Edition Mercurial Superfly – The limited edition Nike Mercurial Superfly for Black History Month took fans by surprise as it was the first promotion of its kind. Ghana international, Kevin Prince Boateng, debuted the look and had fans looking for other players selected to wear the cleats and apparel.
