No less than eighteen new Major League Soccer jerseys will be unveiled this week as part of MLS Jersey Week 2014.
Many of them will take the field this weekend as the USA’s top division of professional soccer kicks off its eighteenth season. Here is the first in our two part series looking at all of the new 2014 MLS shirts.
Houston Dynamo Away
The Dynamo go with a clean white look for their 2014 away jersey. However the heritage of the club is represented in the shirt’s details particularly via the novel “Forever Orange” tagline printed just below its left adidas shoulder stripes.
LA Galaxy Home
MLS’ best known franchise abroad (thanks to David Beckham) dons the now popular Galaxy sash once again. The 2014 LA sash is made up of eleven individual lines in with the club’s colors present via a gradient pattern. They are meant to represent Los Angeles’ energy and non-stop motion.
Portland Timbers Away and Third
The Portland Timbers represent their city’s nickname of The Rose City via a new road kit in various shades of red with a subtle thorn design worked into it. The classic looking dark green and gold third jersey pays homage to the club’s past by using a polo collared design based on the kits worn by the Timbers in the 1970s.
Seattle Sounders Third
“Pitch Black” is the theme for the Sounders FC 2014 third kit. Needless to say it uses a black base that is accented by Seattle’s famous rave green. It is matched with radiant green shorts and socks and features the club’s 40th Anniversary logo.
Chicago Fire Home
The Chicago Fire incorporates a heavy dose of blue on its home kit for the first time ever. The club says that the design of the jersey “embodies the spirit of Chicago, drawing inspiration from the city’s flag and most iconic emblems.” The front of the shirt is highlighted by the light blue color from the city’s flag, while the back features the six-pointed stars on the Fire’s crest and the neck tape.
Columbus Crew Home
The Columbus Crew unveiled their 2014 home jersey via a YouTube web stream that was worth the wait. The new shirt is in The Crew’s classic yellow with black accents. The most prominent of these are sleeve splashes. An Argyle design appears on the bottom section of the shirt and fades away as it goes upwards to the chest area.
Montreal Impact Home
The boys from North of the Border return for 2014 in the customary royal blue. The Canadian club continues to pay homage to their city and the province by including their symbols on the 2014 Montreal Impact home kit: the blue color, the Mont-Royal cross and the fleur-de-lys. This season, the cross has been shifted to the left, while there is a new fleur-de-lys on the lower, front of the jersey.
New England Revolution Home
The Revs 2014 home kit is one of the most restrained in their storied history. Nothing to complain though as it is a simple, great shirt for jersey purists. Of note is the inclusion of the Flag of New England (the state) on its rear outer back with “New England EST 1996” printed on the inside neck of the jersey. The team’s colors of red, white and blue always work well for Revs and USA soccer fans.
Real Salt Lake Home
Last season’s Western Conference champions 2014 and 2015 home jersey showcases the RSL’s unique claret and cobalt color combination with the body of the shirt in the club’s claret and the sleeves of the shirt colored cobalt. A gold “crown bar” has been introduced across the chest and extended onto both sleeves for an extremely contemporary feel to Real Salt Lake’s new primary shirt.
