The Guardian is one of the most read papers in the UK and have a long list of soccer pundits to comment on the beautiful game.  In their section ‘The Knowledge’ which answers questions posed by readers the paper published the starting XI of an all USA team.

The catch was that to make the team the player’s last name (or in the case of the US the name used on a player’s jersey) had to be the name of a U.S. city as well.  Ben Heidinger submitted the starting XI.  The only player actually from the United States is goalkeeper Tim Howard.

USA City Name Starting XV

Tim Howard (Howard City, MI)
Glen Johnson (Johnson City, TN)
Rio Ferdinand (Ferdinand, IN)
John Terry (Terry, MS)
Luke Shaw (Shaw, MS)
Aaron Ramsey (Ramsey, MN)
James Milner (Milner, GA)
Memphis Depay (Memphis, TN)
Eden Hazard (Hazard, KY)
Raheem Sterling (Sterling IL)
Diego Costa (Costa Mesa, CA)

The Knowledge answers also included teams for England, Scotland, Ireland, Italy, Spain, and even Turkey.

What other players could have been included on the U.S. team?
