The FIFA World Cup is the most followed sporting event in the world so it should come as no surprise that Brazil 2014 topped facebook’s global charts with over 3 billion comments, likes, and posts from over 350 million users. It may be a surprise that the World Cup drove more conversations on the social media site than any other in history.

But it was not only the World Cup driving the chatter globally as soccer players did well on the list of Most Talked About Athletes in the U.S.  The Top 10 Athletes included 4 soccer players, Lionel Messi (3), Tim Howard (7), Luis Suarez (8), and Cristiano Ronaldo (9).  And the critics say that sports fans in the U.S. will never come around to soccer!

David Beckham is no longer showcasing his talent on the field but is still in the minds of Americans.  The former England international had the 5th most viewed ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.  The challenge finished in 5th most talked about global event of 2014.

Old ‘Golden Balls’ was not the only soccer player making the Ice Bucket challenge.  Barcelona defender Gerard Pique indirectly made it by taking part in Shakira’s ice bucket challenge video.

The annual list is compiled by facebook and were ‘measured by how frequently a topic was mentioned in Facebook posts made between January and December 2014. To put this list together, Facebook posts were analyzed in an aggregated, anonymized way, and then ranked to create a snapshot of the year on Facebook.’
