Tottenham Hotspur has a new pair of kits for the upcoming season with features honoring one of the club’s greatest idols. The English Premier League side, currently partnered with Baltimore-based Under Armour since 2011, is the company’s highest profile club. Spurs finished sixth on the Premier League table last season, good for the last Europa League spot. This North London club has success throughout its’ history, with two league titles, eight FA Cups, two UEFA Cups, and were the first British club to win a European trophy when they defeated Atletico Madrid for the Cup Winner’s Cup in 1963. Most of these honors are credited to one man.
Bill Nicholson is revered as one of the greatest icons in Tottenham Hotspur history. He devoted his entire career to this one club, and attained greatness with them. The English wing-half, who would later manage Spurs, spent over thirty-five years with the club, leading them to two First Division titles: one as a player in 1950-51, another as manager; a league-FA Cup double in 1960-61. So strong was his bond with the club, he put Tottenham over the English National Team, where he would score on his first and only touch for England, on his first and only game on the international level.
Nearly ten years after Nicholson’s passing, Under Armour made sure to capture his essence and legacy. The home kit has his inspirational quotes and messages along with the gates of White Hart Lane embroidered on the shoulder yoke. The shirt also features modern effects, with navy piping that extends through the sleeves to the yellow cuff trim, and a navy mandarin collar with yellow trim connecting to, and dividing, the upper chest piping. The navy neckline on the inner collar has the gated design in yellow. The shorts are navy, and are plain, save for the yellow trim at the bottom. The socks come in white with a yellow and navy stripe. A navy Spurs label appears at the backside.
Tottenham’s away also shares some of Nicholson’s greatest accomplishments. This black and yellow clash kit features eleven thin stripes at the center, one for each title Nicholson won in his time with Spurs. The stripes fade towards the middle. The shirt also features a round collar, with bold yellow sleeve cuff trim and side piping on both the front and back. The club’s iconic cockerel emblem, along with the UA logo are in white on the chest. The neckline retains the gated design, and the back of the shirt has a yellow spiked design on the back collar. The shorts are black, and are devoid of any design. A unique design is present on the socks, as the black socks has yellow spikes on each side descending from the top. A white Spurs label is on the backside. Hong Kong-based financial insurance company AIA returns as the main sponsor, as the logo appears red on the home, and white for the away shirts.
Tottenham Hotspur will aim to seize glory this season, in a pair of kits honoring a man whose commitment to this club is steeped deep into its history.
