Southampton FC launched their 2016/17 home and away jerseys and other team apparel at St Mary’s Stadium today. It was the first release of gear from the club’s new technical sponsor, Under Armour, as part of their 7-year partnership.
The occasion demanded a special presentation and the club and Under Armour made sure to deliver.
Saints fan Ed Powell won a competition to visit Under Armour’s Baltimore headquarters to learn everything about the innovation behind the jersey. Following his visit to U.S., Powell was tasked with the delivery of the first pack of Southampton 2016/17 shirts to St Mary’s Stadium.
Saints players Charlie Austin, Jay Rodriguez and Oriol Romeu where the first to don the new home uniform for the upcoming Premier League campaign. The home jersey will debut on-field when Southampton take on Watford in their Premier League opener on Saturday, August 13.
“Under Armour were appointed with the brief of giving our players the tools required to reach their potential, and these kits are designed with this in mind,” said Saints chairman Ralph Krueger. “Using their experience with athletes and understanding what they need to succeed, Under Armour has been able to apply that knowledge throughout the process of creating our performance wear.”
The home jersey features a modern twist to their traditional design. The 5 red and white stripes represent the club’s 5 core values and are complimented by a solid white arched chest panel. The chest panel serves as the background for the club badge over the heart and the Under Armour logo in red over the right chest. The Virgin Media logo is across the chest.
The modern look is continued with the faux v-neck collar. The collar has red detailing on the front and a striking black detail on the back of the collar. Inside the nape of the neck the club’s motto, WE MARCH ON, is printed and flanked by red and white stripes.
The solid red sleeve features a narrow band of white and wide band of black on the cuff.
The same silhouette is used for the away jersey but with black and grey colors and red detailing. The solid black jersey uses grey on the arched chest panel. Red detailing is used on the back of the collar and on the narrow upper band of the sleeve cuff.
“Southampton is a club with incredible hunger, and we wanted to provide a kit to help fuel their ambition as a club on a continued ascent,” said Peter Murray, VP Global Sports Marketing at Under Armour. “In addition to bringing some of our unique technologies in the first-team kit to help players achieve more on the field, we’ve also immersed ourselves in the culture and values of this football club and their passionate fans, and created a kit that marries tradition with forward-thinking innovations. We can’t wait to see what Southampton achieve this season, and we’re excited to be a part of their journey.”
The port city in the south of England is no doubt getting behind the Saints 2016/17 Premier League campaign.
