After some turmoil with their technical sponsorship over the past 5 years, Southampton was eager for stability and announced a 7-year partnership with Under Armour at Saint Mary’s Stadium on Thursday.
The partnership will see the American based company provide the club’s matchday, training, and leisure apparel starting for the 2016/17 Premier League season as well as outlining 6 pledges that the partners will pursue to support initiatives from the senior team to youth level and include men and women.
“Under Armour shares similar values to us in that they achieve success through a combination of hard-work and strategic thinking,” Ralph Krueger, Chairman of Southampton FC., said that the event. “At Southampton, our determination to succeed is accompanied by a commitment to develop athletes as people, and this partnership reflects this. Our challenge now is to retain our ‘underdog’ mentality whilst entering a sustained period of success.”
The broad scope of the partnership is evident from the six pledges that will touch on all aspects of the club and the surrounding community. The commitments will see the partners: 1) innovate and create revolutionary product to help the first team to perform at the highest level, 2) provide academy players over 5,000 pairs of Under Armour soccer cleats over the next 7 years, 3) kit out more than 5,000 fans in the local community through the Saints Foundation, 4) develop the women’s and girl’s game, 5) engage fans in the benefits of sport and healthy living, and 6) always be committed to keep the fans and innovation at the heart of all initiatives.
