Small sided soccer is one of the most popular styles of the game played in cities. It requires minimal (if any) set-up or maintenance so can be played almost anywhere and fewer players so it is easy to get a game started. And of course it gives the player the chance to stamp the game with their unique skills.
Games are everywhere and all-the-time around New York City but earlier this week Chelsea Football Club checked in with FC Harlem as part of their U.S. preseason training and took the small sided game to a new high.
The 2 v 2 small sided games were the perfect environment for the players to shine with the top players from all over the Big Apple. The players were kitted out with the 2015/16 Chelsea home and away jerseys representing the 2 sides and the adidas X15 and adidas Ace15 the cleats.
The passion of the game carried over to the fans. The field was surrounded by fans, most appearing to be aspiring players, hoping to one day have their opportunity to highlight their skills.
And they were no doubt also hoping to catch a glimpse of have a selfie moment with one of their favorite Chelsea player. The Blues’ first team players Oscar, Cezar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill, Diego Costa and Eden Hazard were in the house to watch the competition and meet their NY fans.
The day also included soccer freestyling with F2 Freestylers from the UK and Jayinho and Flo from the U.S. on hand.
The final whistle blew on the event but the players will continue to find a game, the fans will find one to watch, and the Chelsea squad will continue to prepare for the Premier League title defense.
