For the 4th consecutive year, Real Madrid sits on top of the table as the World’s Most Valuable Soccer team according to the annual rankings by Forbes Magazine.  Real Madrid is worth $3.65 billion, up 12% from last season.  The only team worth more is the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League at $4 billion.

Most Valuable Sports Teams
Team – Value

1. Dallas Cowboys – $4 bil
2. Real Madrid – $3.65 bil
3. Barcelona – $3.55 bil
4. Manchester United – $3.32 bil
5. New England Patriots – $3.2 bil

Other notable soccer clubs on the list are: Bayern Munich ($2.7 billion), Arsenal ($2 billion), Manchester City ($1.9 billion), Chelsea ($1.6 billion), Liverpool ($1.5 billion), Paris Saint-Germain ($814 million), Inter Milan ($599 million), and AS Roma ($500 million).

Los Merengues have generated more revenue than any soccer club for 11 straight years.  This run of form may be coming to an end, however.

The bulk of the revenues that push teams to the top are from television agreements, shirt sponsorships, major sponsors (eg stadium naming rights), and qualifying for European competitions, most notably the UEFA Champions League.

Real Madrid and Barcelona, the 3rd most valuable team on the list, have the added benefit of negotiating individual TV contracts pulling in record amounts of $189 million and $192 million, respectively.  But starting next season, La Liga will turn to a more league wide system for TV distributions which will cut into Real and Barca’s slice of the pie.

The top could see a shake-up next year not only due to La Liga’s new TV revenue sharing.  Manchester United may miss out on next season’s UEFA Champions League and the solid revenue from Europe’s top club tournament.  Last year the top teams pulled in between $44 million and $101 million depending on their results.

Barcelona may be eyeing the top spot as well with their planned renovation of the Camp Nou.  The $400 million update could add the revenues to take the top spot.
