The U.S. women’s national team and Nike unveiled the 2015 Home Jersey last week. The white jersey with black details and a hint of blue inside the collar has been well received by the players who are honored to have the privilege to pull on the jersey and play for national pride and the fans who stand behind the team.
“It’s an honor every time I pull on the jersey and see the crest that I am wearing,” U.S. national team forward Alex Morgan told 365.WorldSoccerShop at the jersey launch. “I feel I need to represent my country in a great way. I can feel it now pulling on the jersey (today at the unveiling).
Tobin Heath and Sydney Leroux, also on hand for the unveiling, agreed that it is a huge honor and added that ‘it comes with a sense of responsibility to carry on obviously amazing legacy’ and the opportunity is ‘an amazing feeling not only to walk out as an individual but as part of a team,’ respectively.
Nike spent over 18 months designing the new look and believe the ‘clean, crisp, simple, and modern’ look of the jersey reflects the team’s style. The players got a sneak peak of the jersey before the launch and they all ‘loved it.’
But it is not all about the look. The jersey is 16% lighter than previous versions and Nike used 3D mapping technology to provide an ideal fit for the players.
This is a huge change even from just a few years ago.
“The first jersey I wore was the gold one,” Leroux said to try and explain how nice the new jerseys are. “The old school gold ones. I mean (the jersey) has completely changed. The gold ones were a little stiff. These are completely moveable, breathable, and lightweight. So it has changed dramatically.”
The players will not be the only ones pulling on the jersey. The number of fans pulling on an official jersey, many with the name of their favorite players including Morgan, Heath, and Leroux, continues to increase and will certainly be a common site this summer in Canada.
The thrill of seeing fans wearing your jersey is not lost on the players.
“I think it is really cool when I see fans wearing my name and number,” Morgan said. “I remember a couple of years ago maybe in 2011 or 12 when I saw fans wearing my name the first time. I think it was my parents that were saying ‘oh, it was so cool, we were coming into the stadium and there were so many Morgan jerseys’ that was exciting to them and me because it was very new to me.”
And for the first time in history, Nike is making the women’s jersey available in men’s cut and sizes. The U.S. WNT jersey differs from the men’s in that it includes the 2 stars over the U.S. Soccer badge for winning the World Cup in 1991 and 1999.
“For men to be able to wear our jerseys with men’s sizes is huge,” Leroux said. “We don’t just have little girls coming to our games but men as fans as well.”
And the fans are a huge part of the team’s success and will be critical if the U.S. is to add a 3rd star to their jersey.
“The passion from the fans makes us want to play for them,” Morgan said. “It is awesome to see the American Outlaws on their feet chanting the entire game!”
“I love the fans,” Heath added. “Anytime you can play in a full stadium. It changes the atmosphere. It changes the intensity. It changes the way the game looks and plays. It creates those big moments you live for as a sports fans. The fans are definitely a huge part of our success.”
And for the fans and the players it is all about winning the Women’s World Cup and they will both be on hand to put in their effort this summer.
“Our fans are great,” Leroux closed by saying. “I think that having the World Cup so close to the U.S. is like having it in the U.S. I think that there will be a lot of fans making the trek up to Canada.”
