Italian superstar Andre Pirlo has finally made his way to the US and signed with new MLS franchise New York City FC. The 36-year-old playmaker will continue to don the #21 jersey as he has with the Italian national team and the Serie A clubs he played for during his career.

The #21 has special significance to him. In his book, Penso Quindi Gioco (I Think, Therefore I Play), Pirlo explains that his father was born on the 21st. It was also the day he was married and the day he made his Serie A debut with Brescia back in 1995. He continues the trend he has had at multiple Italian clubs such as Milan and Juventus in America by taking his favored #21.

The 36-year-old playmaker joins fellow designated players Frank Lampard and David Villa in a bid to bring the Big Apple club to the heights that are expected with a team boasting such an impressive roster.

“Nobody could question that in Pirlo we are bringing one of the best in the world and one of the finest players to come to MLS,” new manager Jason Kreis said about the signing.

NYCFC’s official Twitter account also shared in the excitement:

Pirlo has earned 115 caps with the Italian national team and helped the Azzurri to the 2006 FIFA World Cup title.  He has achieved the highest honors with his club teams as well winning 2 UEFA Champions League title with AC Milan and a total of 6 Serie A titles (2 with Milan and 4 with Juventus).
