Partick Thistle has a new sponsor, Kingsford Capital, for the front of their jerseys but all the news coming out of the event is about the new team mascot, Kingsley. Kingsley appears to be the mutated off-spring of the Jimmy Dean Sunshine Sausage mascot and Maggie from The Simpsons…after a long night out drinking.
The sun-like mascot has empty eyes with a unibrow, wide nostrils, and howling mouth and is the creation of Turner Prize nominated artist David Shrigley. The mascot has not been well received by many fans but don’t expect to see a more cuddly, smiling version announced anytime soon.

Shrigley, a Thistle fan, was instrumental in getting the club the sponsorship. The Glasgow based artist met Kingsford’s manager Mike Wilkins, an art collector, a couple of years ago at an art event in San Francisco. One thing led to another and soon Wilkins was speaking with Thistle’s managing director Ian Maxwell about a deal.
“I had been looking for an opportunity to get involved with something like this in the UK for a while but hadn’t been able to find the right match,” Wilkins said in the BBC. “When I got talking to David Shrigley about Partick Thistle it seemed like it could be the perfect fit. The next step for me was to speak directly to the club. I hope that this relationship will become more than just your average sponsorship deal.”
The 2-year deal is reported to be worth $315,000.
It should come as no surprise that the mascot is somewhat pushing the boundary. Serious artist usually are not creating mainstream looking pieces but maybe the look is not that bad. The mascot is has an odd look partially due to the way the person wears the suit. The use of his arms and legs as rays of sun and mouth over his belly is somewhat creepy.
The logo that will be on the Jags jerseys is fierce looking but not that scary.
Would you buy a Partick Thistle jersey with this logo? What some fans complain about others will find cool. World Soccer Shop is working on carrying this jersey for the 2015/16 Scottish Premier League campaign.
