For the first time in Barclays Premier League history an own goal got the season started when Tottenham’s Kyle Walker knocked in the winner for Manchester United in the 1-0 victory at the newly re-branded Old Trafford on Saturday. The Hotspur probably deserved a share of the points as they looked the better team for large periods of the match.
But the inauspicious low scoring beginning was not a sign of things to come on the weekend with 28 goals and 2 own goals. 5 of the 10 games featured 4 goals or more with Leicester City the surprise package hitting a league high 4 goals in the opening matchday.
The brace from the Foxes Riyad Mahrez has the Algerian tied with Manchester City’s Yaya Toure on top of the Premier League Golden Boot table with 2 goals. Toure scored the opening 2 goals in City’s Monday night win but he may not keep the opener as it appeared David Silva re-directed it off Michael Dawson before it found the back of the net. 22 other players scored in the opening weekend. There were plenty of highlight reel goals among those scored. Liverpool’s Coutinho’s was arguably the best when factoring in not only the shot but the importance. The Brazilian put in this fabulous goal in the 1-0 win in the 84th minute.
Everton’s Ross Barkley had a similarly impressive effort.
