New York City FC made a splash in their inaugural Major League Soccer season in 2015 mainly with their high-profile signings. The buzz heading into this season, however, is the striking new secondary jersey channeling the energy of the Big Apple from league-wide technical sponsor adidas. The team will debut the jersey in a pre-season friendly against the Montreal Impact on February 17.
The navy blue jersey has vibrant almost psychedelic design on the front of the jersey. The navy blue jersey has a ripple effect created with light blue circles emanating from the team badge over the heart. The design embodies the chaotic energy of New York City.
The navy blue and orange compliment the light blue traditional color of Manchester City, the MLS club’s parent team, and were selected as they are the colors of the New York City flag. The orange detail is used on the sleeve cuff, the MLS badge on the left sleeve, adidas 3-Stripes running from under the arm to the waistline, and NYC monogram on the jock tag at the lower corner of the jersey.
Highlighting the bond between club and supporters, fans were allowed to vote on elements of the jersey. They had the final say to include ‘This City Never Sleeps’ and ‘This is your City’ on the neck tape at the back of the collar.
“I love this jersey,” Club Captain David Villa commented. “It is a unique design and our team is excited to wear it as we represent our Club and our fans on the road. It was a pleasure to be able to make sure our fans saw the jersey first. They make the Club what it is, so it is important for us to make them part of everything we do.”
Etihad Airways returns as the shirt sponsor, also in orange. The full kit is completed with navy shorts and socks with orange trim.
The New York City FC 2016 away jersey will be available at World Soccer Shop.
