Major League Soccer announced that a second club in New York City owned by the Manchester City and the New York Yankees would become the league’s 20th franchised on May 21, 2013. The club was not scheduled to open their inaugural campaign until the 205 MLS season.
The documentary ‘Win’ tells the story of the 2 years between being awarded a franchise and kicking the first ball and will premiere at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.
The story was compelling from the day of the announcement. The $100 million expansion fee was a record at the time and brought together 2 unlikely partners; one from the English Premier League and one from American baseball.
And there was an immediate rivalry with crosstown, or should we say cross Hudson rival, New York Red Bulls, a team long associated with the Big Apple but that never played in the 5 boroughs and not considered New York enough for some hardcore city dwellers.
“We are honored to be part of the Tribeca Film Festival, and excited to share the story of New York City FC,” New York City FC Sporting Director and first even employee, Claudio Reyna, said. “I have been incredibly proud to be part of this Club and to have watched us grow and develop into what we have become, in our second season in Major League Soccer. We hope this will give our fans and anyone with an interest in our great game an insight into the unique challenges of building a Club.”
The film captures the development of the club from building a roster which includes global superstars like David Villa and Frank Lampard, hiring the successful Jason Kreis, playing in historic Yankee Stadium, the challenges, and highs and lows through the first season.
The independent film crew was led by director, Justin Webster and produced by Richard Brown of Anonymous Content with ongoing support from special advisor Dylan Leiner of Sony Pictures Classics was handed all-access insight into the training fields, locker rooms, and boardrooms.
“Win! is the story of a few people – including a former player-turned-executive, a star coach and a group of famous and not-so-famous soccer players – who take on a huge challenge: to build the first professional sports team in New York in over 20 years, hoping to stand alongside some of the most hallowed names in sports culture including the Yankees, Knicks and Giants,” Director Justin Webster said of the project.
