Nike’s most recent update to the popular Tiempo line-up hit store shelves on Tuesday. The Tiempo Legend VI was unveiled over 2 weeks ago in Munich with fans and players eagerly awaiting the retail launch.
The cleat no longer features the quilting some distinct on earlier editions. The latest version has a new structured foam backed cage to provide a shell for a thin layer of kangaroo leather. The kangaroo leather is lightweight but still gives the touch of a classic leather cleat.
“Yea, so our highest level Tiempos all use kangaroo and it’s actually adapted kangaroo so it has another coating on it so it performs great whether you are playing in wet conditions or sunny/dry conditions, and it’s super lightweight,” Nike’s Senior Footwear Designer Nathan VanHook told Highsnobiety after the launch in Munich. “You can get this leather really thin and with this package we’ve created you can get it thinner than before so you get a great touch – almost less when you touch the ball so you have that great sensation.”
The launch colorway is set to make players take notice as well. Nike went with a white upper with black detailing on the heel and a black Nike Swoosh with Nike orange border. The black sole plate has ‘Tiempo’ written in orange with the tips of the studs clear.
“When we show the players they’re like, “wow, that’s the Tiempo?” VanHook went on to say. “It’s a really great testament to the design and the designer that worked on this project, Vianney de Montgolfier, an amazing French designer, really pushed what the Tiempo is in the year 2016. You’ve got your football-obsessed teen and because of the stuff they grew up with, like the Nike Free and Lunar, their expectations are for us to push and that’s what we’re doing.”
The cleat is backed by some of the game’s top players. Germany and Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng, France and Tottenham’s Hugo Loris, Spain and Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos, Spain and Barcelona’s Gerard Pique, France and Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny, Spain and Real Madrid’s Dani Carvajal, and France and Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane to name a few.
