By Kylie Bivens Hooper – When Nike approached Julie Johnston to join their elite team of Nike Athletes, this was a match made in heaven. Johnston put on her 1st pair of black Nike Tiempo cleats when she was only 8 years old. To this day, Tiempos continue to be her cleat of choice. She has seen many soccer seasons with many teams, played at various levels and relocated her life numerous times for soccer but the one thing that has remained constant are the cleats on her feet.
Relatively new to the senior U.S. WNT and participating in her 1st Women’s World Cup this June, Johnston is definitely no stranger to US Soccer. Moving up through the ranks of youth soccer in the United States, Johnston participated in the Olympic Development Program which eventually landed her a spot on various youth national teams including the U-20 National Team, a team that she led as captain to the 2012 U-20 FIFA Women’s World Cup title.
Johnston has quickly started to make a name for herself as the team is days away from the WWC kick-off match scheduled for June 8. In 2015 alone, Johnston has scored 3 goals for the WNT as a defender all within her last 3 appearances with the WNT.
When asked where and how she thought she would fit into such a talented group, she explained that she is still trying to figure that out but that she is focused on continuing to push herself to develop her game. It appears Johnston is ‘figuring it out’ much quicker than anticipated.
Playing at the highest level, Johnston remains loyal to her Nike Tiempo cleats and she will rely on them to carry her through the upcoming WWC matches. When asked what color she will be sporting for FIFA WWC 2015, she said that she prefers the traditional classic black cleat but does not know what Nike has in store for her for the WWC. As long as they are the Tiempos on her feet she will be ready.
