Nike Soccer and EA Sports have joined forces to create a special edition of the Mercurial Superfly V cleats ahead of the launch of FIFA 17 next week. Introducing the Mercurial X EA Sports boots.
The cleats feature an eye-catching design that celebrates the progression from the 16-bit graphics of 1994 (when the first FIFA videogame came out) to today’s high definition output. The medial side of the shoes shows a a 16-bit graphic that transitions into the high-definition lateral side.
Special pixelated Mercurial and Nike logos have been designed for this release (including bespoke boxing and bag). The EA Sports logo is seen on the sockliner, lace and heel. Only 1500 pairs will be available globally, and each one of them is marked accordingly.
As final touch, a golden thread runs through the laces, while the soleplate features a striking iridiscent look.
“This collaboration came together rather organically,” says Nathan Van Hook, Senior Design Director for Nike Soccer. “Our design team spends a lot of our free time playing football – both on the pitch and via video game – we’re pretty obsessed with both. We wanted to create something memorable that brings together the physical and virtual worlds.”
