Nike was a founding partner of the National Women’s Soccer League and they announced on Wednesday that they would continue to be the league’s official kit, apparel, and equipment partner through the 2019 season.
The most noticeable aspect of the deal for fans is that all 9 NWSL teams and any future teams wear Nike jerseys. Nike worked with club teams to create some distinctive jersey designs for the 2015 season.
In addition to being the technical sponsor for the league, Nike sponsors many of the league’s top players including U.S. women’s national team players Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan, Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe, Tobin Heath, Christen Press, Julie Johnston, Meghan Klingenberg, Amy Rodriguez, Ali Krieger, Ashlyn Harris, Sydney Leroux, Whitney Engen, Crystal Dunn, and Alyssa Naeher
“This deal is really about the future of the league,” says Houston Dash and USWNT forward Lloyd. “For women’s soccer to continue to flourish, we need partners like Nike who are committed. In past, there’s always been a huge question mark around the future. Now, the stage is set for continued success at the national level, as well as the club level.”
For Nike the partnership also positions themselves as the leader in women’s soccer in the U.S. The Swoosh has appeared on the USWNT jerseys since 1995 and they have sponsored some of the best women’s soccer players, most notably Mia Hamm, in the world. The largest building at Nike’s World Headquarters is named after the legendary player.
“Nike is extremely proud to continue our partnership with the NWSL,” says Andrea Perez, North America General Manager of Soccer for Nike. “This extension not only gives soccer fans more opportunities to see their favorite athletes in action, but it also reinforces Nike’s overall leadership in women’s soccer, helping to grow the women’s game beyond where it stands today.”
