Chivas´ winless streak extended to 13 games as the crisis at the Mexican club rolls on with a 3-0 loss against Argentina´s Velez Sarsfield in the Copa Libertadores.
The team played its best 45 minutes of 2012 in a difficult game away in Group 7, but lost three goals after halftime to leave a tricky path to qualification having only tied its first game at home to Ecuador´s Deportivo Quito.
Mauro Obolo opened the scoring for Velez in the 68th minute, with Chivas ´keeper Luis Michel failing to cover his near post from a short range shot.
Federico Insua added two in the space of two minutes 12 minutes later as the wheels fell off for Chivas after a long trip south.
In last place in both the league and its Copa Libertadores group, the Guadalajara-based all Mexican club is also facing criticism after promoting a league and federation wide ban on national sports daily Récord.
Chivas´ Sporting Director Rafael Ortega and club owner Jorge Vergara have both admitted they should´ve brought in reinforcements over the winter, as both its domestic and continental seasons slip away.
“We are doing everything possible to improve and we have to work until death on the field,” coach Nacho Ambriz told the press after the game.
On a brighter note, Cruz Azul made it two wins out of two in the Copa Libertadores, meaning it needs only four points from its remaining four matches to get to the magic 10 points, which is usually enough to qualify for the next round.
Cruz Azul dominated the contest against the Venezuelan side, with Javier Orozco scoring his third goal of the Copa Libertadores and moving him to joint top goalscorer in this season´s competition.
