Estudiantes Tecos, Atlas in must win relegation dogfight

It is still early in the Clausura 2012 season, but Friday´s mouthwatering clash between Guadalajara city rivals Estudiantes Tecos and Atlas will likely be the last in Mexico´s first division for some time.

The teams make up the bottom two places in the relegation table, with Atlas four points ahead of Teco after the same amount of games.

To put it simply, if Estudiantes Tecos lose, a seven-point gap between them and Atlas would likely be insurmountable, even at this stage of the season.

Earlier in the week, the university-team installed experienced Uruguayan Hector Eugui as coach, making the formation and line-up for Friday´s game unknown.

The mind games have been building in the local press all week, with Estudiantes Tecos charging 17 dollars for the cheapest ticket, in the knowledge that the majority of the stadium will be Atlas fans.

To rub in the steep price that has enraged Atlas fans, Tecos captain Juan Carlos Leaño said the club will be giving out two tickets to any Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara student who turns up at the ticket office two hours before the game.

Atlas have chipped in too, with the midfielder questioning whether Tecos are simply too slow at the back.

“You can say they are slow and have a lot of experience,” Torres told reporters. “We have to make the most of the players that are fast … the (Tecos) defense is a weak.”

Torres added that Tecos are the team that have most to lose in the game.

“They´re going to have more pressure because they have to win,” he added.

The relegation humdinger kicks off at 9:10 Eastern Time on Friday.
