Struggling Chivas take on Pumas UNAM and joint leaders Santos Laguna and Club Tijuana face off in a mouthwatering double-header on Sunday in Mexico´s Primera Division.
Pumas against Chivas pits two grandes of Mexican soccer, and two clubs dedicated to their youth systems.
On the field, home side Pumas will likely field eight or nine players that have graduated from their academy, while Chivas´ starting team could be made up exclusively of youth team products.
“The game with Chivas is a Clasico for me because of the rivalry that exists between the youth teams,” Pumas midfielder David Cabrera told the press in Mexico City. “I think that, together with Atlas, we have the best academies and that makes this game interesting.”
Pumas go into the game with four points from three games, while Chivas sit at the bottom of the table, on zero points. New Chivas coach Ignacion Ambriz will make his debut at the helm of the Rebaño Sagrado.
Pumas versus Chivas kicks off at 1 p.m. Eastern Time on Sunday.
Straight after (at 3 p.m. Eastern) is a top of the table clash between Club Tijuana and Santos Laguna in the border city.
The offense-minded Santos will seek to break through Club Tijuana´s well organized and sturdy defense.
Both teams are on seven points from three games, with Santos continuing the fine form that has seen them reach three of the last finals of the playoffs and Club Tijuana hoping to build on their 11-game unbeaten run.
“We are very even in the table, I think it will be a great game, attractive for the fans and also for us,” said Tijuana midfielder Fernando Arce.
