Onyewu Brace Powers Sporting

Several US internationals made the highlight reels this weekend, chief among them being Sporting CP's two-goal monster Oguchi Onyewu, who ruled their 2-0 win over Beira-Mar.

Also, Alfredo Morales went unused in Hertha Berlin's 2-1 hmoe loss to Hamburg and David Yelldell did the same in Bayer Leverkusen's 1-1 share at Werder Bremen.

Across the world in Mexico, Puebla's DaMarcus Beasley rounds out our hat trick American scorers for the early dazzler that was enough to top home side Jaguares 1-0.

The veteran speedster shimmied his way into the area to hit just five minutes in to spark the visitors to their first win of the Clausura.

With Herculez Gomez looking on, Santos Laguna went top with a 3-1 victory over Tijuana. Edgar Castillo went the distance for the beaten hosts and Joe Corona came off the bench at the hour, eventually winning the penalty kick for their consolation goal.

Standout performer Zak Whitbread and Norwich City are also on to the round of 16 thanks to a 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion.

Birmingham City right back Jonathan Spector will be joining them after a 4-0 walk at Sheffield United.

Cup back-up netminder Brad Friedel and Tottenham advanced with a 1-0 win at Watford, while Conor Doyle went unused in Derby County's 2-0 home ouster to Stoke City and Brad Guzan's Aston Villa dropped out with a 3-2 loss at Aston Villa.

Down in League One, Frank Simek and Carlisle had a day to forget in a 4-0 loss at Hartlepool.

In nearby Scotland, Maurice Edu worked a fine 74 minutes and Carlos Bocanegra the whole route as Rangers blasted Hibernian 4-0.

Italian action saw Michael Bradley and Chievo take a 3-0 loss on the chin from rude guests Lazio.

Over to the Netherlands, Jozy Altidore spurned two good chances after coming on at halftime of AZ's 2-0 defeat at Roda JC.

Down one flight, Charles Kazlauskas and Helmond Sport got well with a 1-0 victory at Fortuna Sittard.

Next door in Belgium, Sacha Kljestan went 75 minutes as leaders Anderlecht settled for a frustrating 0-0 stalemate at Beerschot AC.
