Steven Reid says it is important for West Brom to keep Roy Hodgson after noting how far the club has progressed during his first year.

Reid: Keen to see Hodgson stay

The Baggies were embroiled in a relegation battle when Hodgson was appointed 12 months ago but he quickly revived their fortunes and staved off the drop with some comfort.

This season has been difficult, with West Brom struggling at home, but they are still five points clear of the bottom three ahead of Sunday's Black Country derby against Wolves.

Hodgson's future is not certain as he is only under contract until the end of the season and has been linked with other roles, including the vacant England job.

However, Reid feels he is the person to take West Brom forward and consolidate their position as a Premier League club.

"The gaffer has been key to the progress we've made," said Reid.

"There was a time we'd be worried about being in the bottom three but now we're trying to keep out of the bottom three. Our focus has changed and it's down to him. We know his situation and we hope he stays on.

"Last season was unbelievable. To finish off the way we did was excellent and it was because of the belief we got from his management.

"This season has been disappointing, especially at home, but we know that he's the man for the job.

"The players have bought into him and we believe in him."

Hodgson has a wealth of experience from managing around the world and Reid has enjoyed working with such a boss.

He said: "We've come a long way as a club during the time I've been here and Roy Hodgson is the man to keep us progressing.

"The very fact that there is an expectation on us not to be down there is all down to him really. It shows what he brings to this club. He's not scared to make big decisions and from day one he has brought in his own ideas and instilled them into us.

"We're talking about someone who has managed clubs at the highest level around the world. You can only learn from someone like that.

"It's obviously a decision that he and the club have to come to but we would be happy for him to remain here."
