Welbeck a Premier League Game Changer

Danny Welbeck is making his name known on a loaded Manchester United side and the striker played his part of game changer in Monday’s EPL match against Tottenham. Check out the other EPL Game Changers on Soccer365’s John McGregor’s weekly list.

Danny Welbeck

You could really put any of Manchester United’s young, exciting talent in this spot. Matched up with an experienced Tottenham side, United relied on youth and athleticism to run them off the field in the 2nd half. Alongside Welbeck, the defending champion’s relied on youngsters like Tom Cleverley, Phil Jones and David De Gea who all performed well. Cleverley is now preferred to Michael Carrick in the center of the United midfield, while Jones was filling in due to injuries to Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. While De Gea has yet to fully acclimate to the EPL, it is obvious that his talent is there.

As the match tightened up early in the 2nd half, it was the combination of Welbeck and Cleverley who found a way past the superb Brad Friedel. Welbeck headed home a fantastic Cleverley cross after slipping his defender in the box. Welbeck then combined with Anderson with a lovely backheel for the 2nd goal that killed that off the match.

Welbeck will certainly have to fight for his place in the starting 11 with Mexican striker Javier Hernandez returning from injury. It seems both have passed last year’s joint top scorer Dimitar Berbatov in Sir Alex Ferguson’s plans for this season. Either way, Manchester United now have two young, quick strikers to choose from, a problem any team would love to have.

Luis Suarez

In a match that failed to live up to its lofty expectations, Luis Suarez came off of the Liverpool bench to provide one of the few bright spots. The Uruguayan striker has struggled to find his full match fitness after a championship run at Copa America, propelling Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish to not include him in his starting 11.

Suarez was subbed on in the 71st minute in place of the largely ineffective Andy Carroll. Up until that point in the match, Liverpool’s play was stagnant and lacking of any imagination or movement. Suarez and fellow substitute Raul Meireles were able to provide both of these as they picked apart a depleted ten-man Arsenal side. Suarez played a vital role in both goals, including tapping in from close range as the match reached stoppage time.

As the season progresses and the players find their fitness, look for Suarez and Carroll to play together in the Liverpool attack. The two combined well at the end of last season, as their contrasting styles seem to mesh well together. Despite the three points, Liverpool will have to improve if they hope to regain their place in the top 4.

Michel Vorm

One of the more intriguing storylines each year in the EPL is watching to see how well the newly promoted clubs adapt to playing in the top division. Swansea City won their promotion by playing a free-flowing attacking style that drew comparisons to clubs like Barcelona and Arsenal. Despite this, it was their goalkeeper, Michel Vorm, who was their most important player in their match with Wigan this weekend.

With both teams among those pegged to be fighting relegation this year, matches like this are vital in the run. Every point is vital, and it was Vorm who delivered this point for Swansea. Making several impressive saves during the run of play, he capped off his great performance with a penalty save in the 73rd minute. Swansea will need consistent performances from Vorm if they hope to avoid Blackpool’s fate from last season.

Andre Villas-Boas

Trailing 1-0 at halftime to West Brom in his home opener was not how the new Chelsea manager envisioned starting his new position. A defensive blunder in the 4th minute from Alex had opened the door for West Brom’s new signing Shane Long, whose finish did not disappoint. The play was surprisingly even for most of the first half, with both teams creating chances.

Villas-Boas’ was able to recover though, with several changes that vastly improved Chelsea’s play. Solomon Kalou was taken off in just the 35th minute in favor of Florent Malouda. Soon after the change, Chelsea finally found its way into the match. It was Malouda who would go on to score the winning goal in the 83rd minute.

It will take Villas-Boas some time to fully implement his full system that was so successful in Portugal last season. Chelsea had been surprisingly quiet in the transfer window until recent weeks, forcing the new manager to start the season with the same team that failed to win the EPL last year. Look for Chelsea to improve as Villas-Boas becomes settled with the English game.

Gabriel Agbonlahor

Just a few years ago, Agbonlahor was considered one of the top young strikers in the EPL. As he has struggled to reach his potential, Aston Villa have moved on to other striker options, leaving his place up in the air. He has found a new role however, this time as a left sided midfielder, a role formerly filled by Ashley Young. Agbonlahor used his pace to dominate the right side of Blackburn’s defense. His scored an exquisite goal after turning his defender and cutting in on his favored right foot before bending the ball into the corner of the goal. With Aston Villa going through a significant transition period, Agbonlahor has a chance to become a permanent fixture in his new role. It will be interesting to see how much defending Agbonlahor is capable of when Villa is facing some of the EPL’s better sides.
