Leeds United midfielder Robert Snodgrass is set for a spell on the sidelines after having his appendix removed.

Snodgrass: Appendix operation

The 24-year-old Scotland international underwent surgery on Thursday and while manager Simon Grayson admitted the news was unexpected, he is hoping Snodgrass will return to action sooner rather than later.

"Rob had an operation on Thursday," Grayson told the club's official website.

"It wasn't something that was planned, but we were hoping to keep it quiet until after the teamsheets had been exchanged at (the New Year's Eve clash with) Barnsley in order not to alert our opponents.

"We're not putting any timescale on things, but hopefully he won't be absent for too long a period."
