Portsmouth could run out of cash in just six weeks, according to the Championship club's administrator, Trevor Birch.

Birch: Says Pompey are running out of cash

Birch told Pompey fans on Wednesday night that the club only had enough money to survive until the middle of April.

The Championship strugglers have accumulated debts of between £40million and £50million, and are set to ask players to defer their wages until the end of the season.

"This is because the cash is going to run out quite quickly, by the middle of April," said Birch.

"At the moment, it is going to be touch and go. We've got very little income to play with."

Birch revealed that should Portsmouth be relegated to League One, the Premier League could ask its teams whether the club should receive the remainder of its parachute payments.

He also told fans that he does not want to start selling the 2012/13 season tickets too early.

"What we're reluctant to do is take money from supporters and then the worst-case scenario happens, the club is liquidated and the fans' money is then used to pay for the administration," he said.

Birch said there is currently no potential buyer for the club, but remains hopeful they will be able to find one.

"I can't believe I am saying this, but my gut feeling is that we will be able to sell," he said.
