Fire Continue Road Run
2008-05-09 16:33:22

The Chicago Fire continued their fine run of form on the road with a 2-0 win over D.C. United at RFK Stadium on Thursday night.  Justin Mapp and Cuauhtemoc Blanco scored on either side of halftime in the victory.

With the victory the Fire move one point ahead of Columbus into first place in the Eastern Conference and their 5-1-1 record betters the team's best seven-game start in team history from 1999 when the held a 5-2 mark.

It was the home side that had the advantage for most of the first half, however, while Chicago was content to defend in the final third.  The Fire patiently waited their chance and in the 39th minute found the opening and after Chad Barrett headed down a cross to Mapp who finished with his left foot from 17 yards out.

Blanco doubled the score in the 62nd minute after dancing through the United defense to perfectly place his left footed shot past a diving Zach Wells, who got a hand on the ball but could not deny the Mexican superstars efforts.
