On a busy Saturday night in MLS, Guillermo Barros Schelotto keyed Columbus to a 3-0 win over visiting Real Salt Lake to pull level at the top of the East.
The former Boca Juniors star served for defender Chad Marshall to open on the quarter hour, and then doubled from the spot himself 10 minutes later.
Schelotto also helped set up Brad Evans near the hour for the rout completion.
The Crew were able to join New England in the penthouse thanks to the Revs allowing home side Toronto FC to rally for a 1-all draw.
Taylor Twellman fired the visitors ahead 10 minutes before intermission, only to have Chad Barrett strike back for the BMO battlers in the 66th minute.
Elsewhere, D.C. United kept pace with the leaders by patiently downing favorite guest Colorado 3-0.
Joe Vide opened his United account just before the break, with Santino Quaranta and Quavas Kirk adding on in the waning moments.
Finally, Kansas City fought back in stoppage time for 1-1 share with visitors FC Dallas.
Andre Rocha scored his first MLS goal to put the away side up after only seven minutes, but after FCD had Pablo Ricchetti sent off with a second booking, Wizards skipper Jimmy Conrad dutifully buried a lunging shot in stoppage time to salvage a point.
