Beckham Arrives At MLS’ Altar
2009-11-16 23:06:50

The Los Angeles Galaxy have reversed the ill will and poor form from last season and are standing on the brink of another MLS Cup title.  Soccer 365’s Andrew Rogers comments on the turnaround and how David Beckham and Bruce Arena led the way for the Galaxy.

by Andrew Rogers

Since the Los Angles Galaxy’s last appearance in the MLS playoffs when they won in 2005, the southern California side has been to football hell and back. The acrimony, fall outs, front office and coaching staff coups and poor performances have made the MLS power house a laughing stock.

Bruce Arena and David Beckham both put their credibility on the line in going to L.A, and next week they could redeem the club, and garner plaudits for the courage of their footballing decisions.

The former U.S. national team coach must take a lot of credit for fitting the world’s highest earning footballer into a side with a Coca Cola League 1 payroll. Arena doesn’t have any leverage over Beckham, and once again highlighted he is in a class of his own when it comes to man management.

Beckham also deserves a lot of credit. It would have been easy for the Essex native to have backed out of the shambles after the previous two seasons. Instead the true measure of his determination has come to the fore again.

It was only five months ago that D-Beck was getting abuse from Galaxy fans, and now he is leading them to their first play-off finals since 2005 and turning down England caps to help LA achieve their domestic goals.

His celebration with Landon Donovan highlighted both sides of the game’s greatest commercial icon. It was good to see his enthusiasm for his teammates and their success, and equally his media whore mentality of hunting down the goal scorer to make sure his picture is in the paper the next day.

Either way MLS and Beckham clearly have the NFL fearing their growing presence on the U.S sports landscape, especially after conspiring with the California electricity board to create two blackouts!
