U.S. men’s national team head coach has named his 23-player roster for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Stars and Stripes will be playing to defend their 2013 Gold Cup title and earn a berth at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.
“Our approach for putting together the roster for this summer’s Gold Cup, which is very, very important to us, is obviously to do everything possible to win this competition,” Klinsmann said at the announcement. “Winning it would qualify us for the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia, so putting the pieces together is very crucial.”
The roster includes 17 players that were part of the 2014 FIFA World Cup squad. Clint Dempsey was included on the roster despite the recent disciplinary action regarding his actions during the Seattle Sounders’ most recent Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match. Dempsey is the only player on the roster to have played in 3 Gold Cups and only player to have won the tournament twice.
Michael Bradley was included on the roster and will likely earn his 100th cap in the opening match against Honduras on July 7. He currently has 98 caps since first appearing under his father, Bob Bradley, in 2006.
After rumors circulated that DaMarcus Beasley was willing to come out of international retirement for the Gold Cup and he was included on the 35 player provisional roster, the 33-year-old was left off the final roster.
