The #10 jersey is iconic. Brazil’s Pele, O Rei (the King), made the number famous but it was Ali Daei who is most loved as the #10 in Iran. The Team Melli forward, who shared ‘the King’ nickname with Pele, holds the record for most goals in international matches knocking in 109 goals in 149 matches between 1993 and 2006.
Daei represented Iran at the 1998 World Cup in France and the 2006 World Cup in Germany. He is the only male player to surpass the 100 goal mark in international fixtures. Hungary’s Ferenc Puskas is a distant 2nd with 84 goals. He is in the top 20 of caps earned.
Daie spent most of his club career in Iran but had stints in Germany with Arminia Bielefeld, Bayern Munich, and Hertha Berlin in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. In 311 games he scored 131 goals.
