Falke Verwer made Major League Soccer history when he became the new league’s 1 millionth fan on this day in soccer history in 1996 in the 47th match.
The 7-year-old earned that distinction when he attended the match between the Columbus Crew and the San Jose Clash, as they were known at the time. His good fortune earned him a Clash jersey, autographed soccer ball by the players and a chance to meet both teams.
Verwer was one of 16,077 fans to attend that match that the home side won 3-2 (2-1 PK’s) from a shootout in use that season to break draws. Pete Marino and Brian McBride scored for the Crew while Henry Gutierrez and second half substitute Altimont Butler scored the 84th minute equalizer in the winning effort.
