Napoli Fans Facing Away Ban
2008-09-03 11:27:36

Napoli fans will be banned from travelling to their team's away games for the rest of the season following Sunday's disturbances.

The decision taken by Italy's interior minister Roberto Maroni comes in the wake of vandalism by a section of Napoli fans which marred the opening day of Serie A.

"A ban will be in place for the entire year for the organised fans of Napoli Calcio," Maroni announced.

Hundreds of Napoli supporters on their way to watch their team play Roma on Sunday at the Stadio Olimpico caused havoc at Naples train station, forcing Italian company Trenitalia to postpone for three hours the departure of a train heading to Turin.

Several trains were also vandalised and later five fans were detained by police after the match.

"Those individuals will be identified and punished for Sunday's savage acts," added Maroni.

"They will not be able to take part in any sporting activity for the next two years."
