Iran is playing in the World Cup for the 4th time in team history and the first time since 2006. Team Melli have their work cut out for them to make it out of the group stage but fans are flocking to support the team.
The optimism under head coach Carlos Queiroz has fans optimistic and looking to show their colors while watching matches. The official Iran home and away 2014 World Cup jerseys are sold out around the globe but all is not lost as the World Soccer Shop has an officially licensed World Cup Iran #10 t-shirt.
The #10 jersey was made famous by ‘The King’ and we are not talking Pele. Former Iran international Ali Daei has been giving that nickname as well and may have a good argument for it. The center forward holds the record for most goals in international matches knocking in 109 goals in 149 matches between 1993 and 2006.
The current #10 for Iran is Karim Ansarifard and is the heir apparent to Daei and by some accounts is the best striker fans have never heard of. The 24-year-old is a prolific scorer for Tractor Sazi in the Iran Pro League and has scored 9 goals in 41 matches.
If Iran is to make it out of Group F that includes Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Nigeria Ansarifard will have to find the net in Brazil. Iran opens their campaign against Nigeria on Monday, June 16, then play the mighty Argentina on Saturday, June 21, and close-out their group work on Wednesday, June 25 against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
